In English, students develop knowledge, skills and understanding about the English language and literature. They also gain the ability to talk, listen, read, view and write with purpose, effect and confidence. They develop knowledge of the ways in which language varies according to context and a sound grasp of language structures, spelling and grammar.
A daily literacy block is used for the explicit teaching and learning of English throughout the school. During this time students engage in a variety of teaching and learning activities which enable them to develop their knowledge and skills across the domains of speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing.
The literacy skills developed through the explicit teaching of English play a central role in all learning and are, therefore, integral to teaching of all Key Learning Areas.
